Identify a Door Lock by the Action It Performs
Observe whether the door turns a deadbolt or cylinder, pulls a latch, lifts a handle, or follows a multipoint sequence before checking smart-lock compatibility.

Start a smart-lock compatibility check by identifying how your door and lock operate, then record the measurements and system details an exact model check needs.
Before choosing a smart lock, work out what the door and existing lock require it to do. A familiar label such as “deadbolt” or “multipoint” is only a starting point: the exact model, door preparation, clearances, key function, and locking sequence can change the result.
Start with the action your lock performs. Then use the relevant guides to measure the door, check a North American deadbolt, or identify a cylinder profile. If your door has several locking points, use the dedicated multipoint identification and measurement checklist.
Measurements from one smart-lock manual do not define a universal standard. Record the country and exact model or variant you are checking, then compare every relevant field with that product’s current instructions. A physical-fit check also says nothing by itself about Matter, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, hubs, or the features available in a particular smart-home platform.
If you cannot identify the mechanism or operation safely, leave it unknown and ask the door or lock manufacturer, a locksmith, or a qualified installer to identify it before you buy or modify hardware.
