Choose an Alternative Lock or Professional Installation
Decide when another documented lock path or a qualified installer is safer than adapting an unsuitable product.
Jump to a section
Choose an alternative only when its documented path addresses the condition that ruled out the first lock. A popular model, a similar cylinder, or a product family listed for the same door brand is not an installed-door compatibility result.
Start from the failed condition
Write down why the current candidate does not fit:
- The cylinder profile, length, or key behavior does not match.
- The door requires a different action, such as pulling a latch or lifting a handle.
- The frame, furniture, security fitting, or weather exposure falls outside the documented conditions.
- The required app, controller, keypad, or remote feature is unavailable.
- The exact model, market, or instruction is uncertain.
If another model addresses that same condition, compare its full requirements against the measured door. Do not replace one unknown with another.

Look for a documented path for the exact door
Manufacturer-supported options can be useful starting points, but they apply only to the named product and conditions. Andersen lists a Yale Assure option for its entry-door family. That does not certify every installed Andersen door, existing mechanism, or later replacement part.
Use the exact manufacturer’s current compatibility guidance for the model and market. If it excludes your lock type or leaves the result unclear, ask the manufacturer for a written answer before buying an accessory or changing the door.
For a model that requires confirmation, use the vendor’s support path before purchase. SwitchBot’s Lock Pro guide asks owners with mortise or other non-standard locks to contact support with photos and dimensions. It also publishes model-specific frame-clearance checks; see the Lock Pro compatibility guide.
Multipoint and security fittings need a specific operating path
Multipoint doors may require the cylinder to turn the mechanism directly or a separate handle action. A motor intended for one action should not be assumed to perform the other.
The Bold Smart Cylinder has a documented path for certain multipoint and core-protected doors, with model-specific length and exposure conditions. See Bold Smart Cylinder on Multipoint and Core-Protected Doors for those checks. They do not establish fit for another brand or every multipoint mechanism.
Ask a professional when the door or access path is uncertain
Contact the manufacturer, a locksmith, or a qualified door installer when:
- The profile, cam, cylinder length, or key function cannot be identified.
- A multipoint or lift-handle sequence is not covered by the exact product guide.
- The proposed change requires drilling, cutting, or changing a shared or rented entrance.
- A security fitting, glass panel, frame, door material, or weather condition is not covered by the documentation.
- Manufacturer instructions are missing or give conflicting limits.
Give the professional the exact smart-lock model and market, clear photos, measured door and cylinder dimensions, existing lock action, key requirements, and the feature you want. Ask for the required parts and any remaining conditions in writing.

When the main problem is a dimension or specific part, use the mechanical accessory guide. For the complete information to collect before checkout, use the purchase checklist.
