North American Deadbolts

Check how a smart lock works with a U.S. or Canadian deadbolt, from the lock type and door preparation to keys, weather exposure, and regional variants.

A smart lock can fit the door and still fail to operate its bolt smoothly. Start by identifying the existing lock, then compare the door with the exact model’s installation instructions. U.S. and Canadian deadbolts share familiar measurements, but product variants, included parts, and documented limits are not interchangeable by assumption.

Keep fit and operation separate

Dimensions are only one part of compatibility. The deadbolt must move freely, the strike must line up, and the smart lock must support the existing lock type and key arrangement. Check electronic features and hubs separately from mechanical fit.

Use the exact model and market instructions. A kit or a matching backset can resolve one condition without proving that the complete door will work. If an opening is shared, fire-rated, unusually constructed, or subject to building or accessibility requirements, get the applicable local guidance before changing the hardware.
