European Smart-Lock Compatibility Checklist
Collect the profile, door operation, cylinder dimensions, key behavior, clearances, and product variant needed for a useful compatibility check.

Use this checklist before choosing a UK or European smart lock. The goal is to record the profile, operation, dimensions, cylinder function, and clearance as separate facts. A product that supports one of them may still fail another.
1. Identify the hardware
- Country and region where the door and product will be used:
- Cylinder profile and visible markings:
- Lock-case or multipoint manufacturer and model, if visible:
- Inside control: key, thumbturn, lever handle, or combination:
- Outside control: key, handle, or separate night latch:
- Photos: outside face, inside face, door edge, and lock markings:

If you see a surface-mounted rim or night-latch case, record it separately from any mortise or multipoint lock. Read the UK oval and night-latch guide if the distinction is unclear.
2. Write down the normal locking sequence
With the door open, use the normal controls and record the order:
- What happens when the door closes?
- Does a latch engage automatically?
- Must the handle be lifted or lowered?
- Does the key move hooks, rollers, a deadbolt, or another part?
- How many turns are needed to secure and release the door?
- Does the same sequence work from the inside?
For example, FUHR describes its multisafe 856 as requiring the lever handle to operate the multipoint mechanism before the key throws the main deadbolt. Other lock families use different sequences. A “multipoint” label does not identify the action a smart lock can complete.
3. Measure the installed cylinder
Record the inside and outside lengths separately, including the measurement reference used by the product guide. Note cylinder projection beyond the fittings, fitting thickness, and any non-standard cam or tailpiece information. Do not compare a measurement that includes door furniture with one that excludes it.
Also measure frame and handle clearance and note whether the door opens inward or outward. Use the exact model’s diagram for its reference points and thresholds. For example, Nuki’s Smart Lock Ultra guide uses the retaining screw and door plates as its reference, sets a maximum of 68 mm inside and 55 mm outside, and gives separate clearance values by door swing. Those limits are for that guide only; Nuki’s Ultra Nordics guide is a separate path.
4. Check the cylinder function
- Does the outside key still operate when a key remains inserted inside?
- Does a smart-lock setup leave a key in the cylinder or use a thumbturn?
- Does the exact product require emergency function or a different cam?
- Does the lock documentation require a freewheel or emergency-key function?
Use a manufacturer’s normal two-key test where applicable; never force the key. Emergency function and freewheel-cam behavior are separate requirements. See the emergency-function guide.
5. Match the exact product
Write down the full smart-lock name, generation, market version, and any cylinder or mounting accessory. Check the current manufacturer instructions for profile, lengths, emergency function, clearances, supported lock cases, and the operation observed above. A profile match or accessory listing does not prove the rest of the door will work.
Check any separate security or certification requirement for the door as well. For example, BSI describes BS EN 1303:2026 as covering cylinder and key performance and testing; that scope does not establish whether a cylinder fits a particular lock case or a smart-lock motor can operate it.
Keep the verdict unverified if a dimension is missing, the model page does not cover the lock case, the handle must move and the motor’s ability to do so is undocumented, or the regional kit is unclear. Send the manufacturer or a qualified locksmith the photographs, product variant, measurements, and sequence. Use the conversion guide only after the actual mismatch is identified.
