Choose a UK/European Smart-Lock Conversion Path
Compare an inside retrofit, replacement cylinder, adapter, or full replacement when the current door does not match a smart lock's requirements.
Jump to a section
When a door does not match a smart lock’s requirements, identify the mismatch before choosing a conversion. A cylinder change can address a cylinder fit or function issue. It cannot make a motor lift a handle, repair a stiff lock case, or prove that a multipoint sequence is supported.

Changing cylinder fit does not change the lock case or raise a handle by itself; verify the exact model and sequence.
Start with the failed check
Use the measurement guide and pre-purchase checklist to name the unresolved condition. Is the profile unsupported, is a cylinder dimension outside the model’s range, does the cylinder lack emergency function, does the motor lack clearance, or does the door require a manual handle movement?
Keep the result conditional until you know which part of the system is responsible. Then compare the available paths:
| Path | What it may address | What still needs confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Inside retrofit over the existing cylinder | Adds a motor while keeping some existing outside hardware or key arrangements. | Exact profile, inside key or thumbturn, required cylinder function, projection, clearances, and full lock sequence. |
| Replacement cylinder | Changes the profile, length, or supported function for a compatible smart lock. | Exact cylinder and cam, keying, lock-case requirements, regional version, and whether the door still needs a handle lift. |
| Manufacturer-listed adapter or adjustment kit | Resolves a specific mounting or cylinder condition for a named product. | Exact model, variant, supported measurements, instructions, and whether the accessory changes only fit or also operation. |
| Full lock replacement | Replaces more of the existing mechanism when the lock case or action is unsupported. | Door preparation, cylinder and lock-case dimensions, multipoint operation, keying, egress, and installation requirements. |
| Professional assessment | Identifies an unusual, managed, or undocumented lock case and checks the complete door. | The proposed hardware still needs to be matched to the confirmed mechanism and product documentation. |

The sketches show what each path may change; product variants differ, and none establishes that the installed lock operates fully.
Keep the examples product-specific
ABUS UK describes two different paths: LOXERIS One is a retrofit drive for a standard Euro-profile cylinder with emergency and hazard function, while CYLOX One replaces the cylinder. Those descriptions do not establish the fit of either product on a particular door.
Aqara’s adjustable cylinder is an accessory for the U200, not a universal Euro-cylinder conversion. Nuki’s Smart Lock Ultra guide gives its own product dimensions and profile list. In each case, check the current instructions for the exact market and version rather than applying a similar product’s limits.
Preserve the key and the complete door function
Before changing a cylinder, check existing keys, keyed-alike arrangements, landlord or building coordination, and any special lock-case or egress requirement. A replacement may change who can use the old key or whether another person can enter. For multipoint doors, verify whether the new hardware can complete the whole sequence or whether a manual step remains.
Do not select an adapter from a profile name or a photograph alone. If a cylinder must meet a freewheel, emergency-key, or certificate requirement, compare that exact requirement with the replacement cylinder’s documentation. If the issue involves a panic lock, shared entrance, fire door, or undocumented mechanism, ask a qualified locksmith or the lock manufacturer to assess the proposed conversion.
Buy only after the exact mismatch has a documented solution and the full door operation has been checked. If no supported conversion is documented, keep the current setup and seek product-specific confirmation.
