Aliro Digital Home Keys vs Matter Smart-Lock Control

Separate wallet-based NFC or UWB access from Matter lock commands, then check the exact lock, phone, wallet, and market.

Jump to a section

Aliro and Matter answer different compatibility questions. Aliro is a digital-access standard for presenting a credential to an access reader. Matter lets a supported smart-home app or controller send commands to a lock. A lock can advertise one capability without proving the other, and neither label tells you which phone, wallet, method, or market is supported.

Two separate paths: a supported wallet credential is presented at a compatible reader, while a smart-home app or controller sends the Matter lock controls its integration exposes; neither capability proves the other.

Keep the access methods separate

The Connectivity Standards Alliance released Aliro 1.0 in February 2026. Its announcement describes NFC for tap-to-access, Bluetooth Low Energy for user-initiated access, and Bluetooth LE combined with Ultra-Wideband (UWB) for hands-free authentication. These are methods in the standard; they are not a checklist that every Aliro-enabled lock must provide.

Aliro 1.0 transport options: NFC tap, user-initiated Bluetooth Low Energy, and Bluetooth LE with UWB for hands-free authentication; exact product and credential support must be checked.

Matter uses its own smart-home connection and command path. A Matter controller may offer lock and unlock controls when the exact lock and ecosystem support them. Matter pairing does not create an Apple Home Key or Samsung Wallet credential, and a phone wallet key does not prove that the lock’s Matter connection exposes remote control, PIN management, status, or automations.

Check Wallet credential or digital home key Matter lock control
Main purpose Present an authorized credential to unlock at the door. Control a supported lock through a smart-home app or controller.
Possible method Aliro describes NFC tap, Bluetooth LE, and Bluetooth LE plus UWB. The exact lock and wallet decide which method is available. Matter lock commands run through the exact device and controller’s supported connection path, such as Matter over Thread or Wi-Fi.
Setup evidence Confirm the wallet, phone/watch, lock model, credential enrollment, region, and any partner app. Confirm the exact lock, Matter controller, transport, hub or border-router requirements, and exposed actions.
What a label does not prove That a particular wallet, phone, method, region, or lock package is supported. That a wallet key works or that every lock feature is exposed in the app.

An NFC card supplied with a lock, an Aliro-compatible credential, Apple Home Key, and Samsung Wallet Digital Home Key are not interchangeable just because they may use a phone or a contactless reader. Check the method and credential path named for the exact lock.

Standards and launch news are not a model verdict

Aliro 1.0 defines a standard and a certification program. That does not show that a retail model is certified for a specific credential method or that its required wallet feature is available in your country. Look for an exact lock/package statement from the manufacturer and current platform guidance. Treat phrases such as “Aliro enabled” as a prompt to verify the model, credential, method, and market.

Samsung announced Digital Home Key in Samsung Wallet in March 2026. Its setup description starts with a compatible lock configured through Samsung SmartThings using Matter. Samsung says access may use NFC tap, UWB proximity, or the app depending on the phone and lock, and that rollout began in selected regions according to each lock partner’s schedule. Its announcement also says Wallet keys can be managed or removed through Samsung Find. These are Samsung’s platform statements; they do not establish every lock’s support, every access method, or regional availability.

Aqara’s U400 shows why the market check matters. The current US product page says the lock supports Samsung Wallet Digital Home Key through SmartThings. The Canadian page still says support was planned for Q1 2026, even though that quarter has passed. Treat the Canadian wording as stale and the current Canadian status as unresolved. It does not prove that the feature has launched there or that it is unavailable. The US statement also does not identify a single access method for every package. Check the exact U400 package, market, lock firmware, Samsung phone and Wallet version, and SmartThings onboarding route.

U400 wallet evidence checked 28 October 2026: the US page lists Samsung Wallet through SmartThings, the Canadian page retains a passed Q1 2026 target without confirming launch or non-availability, and Samsung says rollouts vary by region and lock partner.

Apple Home Key is another separately named wallet path. Aqara lists Home Key for the U400 and separately describes Apple’s UWB approach-unlock conditions. Do not infer Apple Home Key from Aliro, infer Samsung Wallet from Apple Home Key, or infer either credential from Matter support. The Aqara U200 and U400 guide covers that lock family’s current app and access requirements.

Verify the path you will rely on

Before buying or changing an ecosystem, record:

  1. The complete lock model, package, country, and current firmware.
  2. The wallet and phone/watch model, operating-system version, and wallet app.
  3. Whether the chosen method is NFC tap, Bluetooth LE, UWB proximity, or app control.
  4. The required manufacturer app, Matter controller, hub, or Thread border router.
  5. How the credential is added, shared, revoked, and recovered if a phone is lost.
  6. Whether local entry works without an internet connection and whether remote app access is a separate feature.
  7. The date and exact official instructions that confirm each result.

Test the credential and the Matter controls as separate functions. Keep the lock’s normal entry method available while setting up a wallet key or changing controller access. For the network and command layers, see Matter, Thread, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and hubs. Record exact-model results in the ecosystem feature matrix.
