August and Schlage Smart Deadbolt Model Records

Separate August retrofit locks from Schlage replacement deadbolts and check the preparation instructions for each exact model.

August and Schlage products can look similar in a product search but use different installation approaches. Record the exact model before comparing dimensions: August Wi-Fi Smart Lock is a retrofit unit that operates an existing deadbolt from inside, while the Schlage examples below are replacement deadbolts with model-specific preparation.

A retrofit smart lock mounted over the interior thumbturn leaves the existing exterior deadbolt in place, while a replacement deadbolt swaps both sides of the lock

August keeps the existing deadbolt in place; the Schlage examples here replace the lock. Each path still needs its own model and door checks.

August: confirm the existing deadbolt and adapter

The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock is documented for most single-cylinder deadbolts. It mounts on the inside and retains the existing outside hardware and key cylinder. Confirm that your installed deadbolt is a supported type and that the interior thumbturn, door clearance, and August installation instructions match. A double-cylinder or other unlisted deadbolt should not be assumed compatible.

August lists adapter parts by lock generation. Match the adapter to the exact existing deadbolt and retrofit generation before installation; an adapter that fits one model does not prove that the deadbolt itself is suitable. August publishes the unit’s approximate dimensions and power details, but those do not replace the existing-lock compatibility check.

Schlage: use the exact preparation sheet

The Schlage Control BE467F preparation document specifies door thickness of about 35–44 mm, a 60 or 70 mm backset, a 54 mm face bore, and a 25 mm edge bore. It also distinguishes existing-hole preparation from drilling a new door. Compare the actual door with the correct instruction sheet; a door with a different bore or edge preparation may need an installation method the guide does not cover.

A replacement-deadbolt preparation drawing shows where door thickness, backset, face bore, edge bore, and strike alignment are checked

Use the exact model’s preparation sheet for the measurements; the BE467F figures above do not apply automatically to other Schlage deadbolts.

Schlage Encode Plus BE499 has its own model record. The cited product page specifies a 35–45 mm door range and 60/70 mm backset, with a C-keyway cylinder detail for that listing. Do not copy BE467F hole values or one trim configuration to BE499 without checking its own installation instructions.

For an Encode BE489, Schlage’s support page identifies the product and links to separate preparation templates. Use the current template for that model. The available summary does not establish its complete dimensions, latch, or strike requirements, so do not fill those details from a different Schlage lock.

Separate the lock from the platform

Wi-Fi or voice-assistant support is a separate question from door preparation. First confirm that the exact lock and included parts physically fit and operate the door. Then verify the current app, hub, network, and feature requirements for that model. For Schlage’s one-bore Encode lever, see the separate FE789 fit guide.
